겹받침 - Double Final Consonants

Double Final Consonants or we can call double batchim are batchim made of two consonants.

In total, there are 11 double batchim: ㅄ, ㄳ, ㄺ, ㄼ, ㄽ, ㄿ, ㄵ, ㄶ, ㄻ, ㄾ, ㅀ. 

These double final consonants have different rule when apply to noun or verb and adjective.

1- Rule for Noun

There are 5 Double Final Consonants for Noun: ㅄ, ㄳ, ㄺ, ㄼ, ㄽ.

When standing alone or followed by a consonant, it is pronounced as follow:

  • ㅄ => [ㅂ] 예: 값 [갑]
  • ㄳ => [ㄱ] 예: 몫 [목]
  • ㄺ => [ㄱ] 예: 닭 [닥]
  • ㄼ => [ㄹ] 예: 여덟 [여덜]
  • ㄽ => [ㄹ] 예: 외곬 [외골]
When followed by a vowel, it is read follow the prolonged sound(연음) rule.

2- Rule for Verb and Adjective

There are 9 Double Final Consonants for Noun: ㅄ, ㄿ, ㄺ, ㄵ, ㄶ, ㄻ, ㄼ, ㄾ, ㅀ.

When standing alone or followed by a consonant, it is pronounced as follow:
  • ㅄ => [ㅂ] 예: 없다 [업따]
  • ㄿ => [ㅂ] 예: 읊다 [읍따]
  • ㄺ => [ㄱ] 예: 읽다 [익따]
  • ㄵ => [ㄴ] 예: 앉다 [안따]
  • ㄶ => [ㄴ] 예: 않다 [안타]
  • ㄻ => [ㅁ] 예: 닮다 [담따]
  • ㄼ => [ㄹ] 예: 넓다 [널따]
  • ㄾ => [ㄹ] 예: 핥다 [할따]
  • ㅀ => [ㄹ] 예: 잃다 [일타]
When followed by a vowel, it is pronounced follow the prolonged sound(연음) rule.
